Cabrera
Cabrera is one of the most unspoilt areas in the whole of the Province of Almeria and has been influenced by the Moors circ. 13th to 15th Century. The Moorish influence is all around the minute you enter Cortijo Cabrera, with its imposing Moorish Archway, and the Moorish architecture and Domes on the houses. The architecture is distinctive but sympathetic to the landscape and history; all the houses are painted from a pallet of terracotta colours helping them to blend with their natural surroundings. The village of Cabrera lies 300m up on the edge of the Sierra Cabrera Mountain Range but is only 10 kms from the beautiful coastal area of Mojacar. Because of its position there are stunning panoramic views across the mountains and countryside and the Cortijo Grande Valley to the distant Sierras and there are even distant vistas to the Mediterranean. Sunsets are particularly beautiful from here. The village is alongside a large area of protected nature reserve with majestic craggy peaks soaring to 900m. These mountains are home to wild boar, eagles and many species of birds making it an ideal place to walk and enjoy the countryside. There is a route ‘The Trans Cabrera Route’ which takes you over the top of the Cabrera mountains passing abandoned villages and areas of ancient cultivated terrace areas and ending up in the village of Salpalmo a small village enroute from Mojacar to Carboneras. In the centre of the village is a lively bar just by the Moorish Archway; a good place to have just a drink and tapa or snack. There are two more restaurants, one set within the walls of an old Moorish building ‘Pastores’ and the other Fatima’s Riad specialising in Moroccan style food. Both restaurants serve excellent food and have beautiful courtyard areas and terraces for dining alfresco. In June Cabrera has its Fiesta in honour of their saint, San Pedro and Peter Grosscurth who was the architect of modern-day Cabrera. This is a lively event which is well supported by residents and visitors alike.
